Just about everyone who has a garden or their own backyard, would love to having it looking lush, green and generally pleasing to the eye. I have sometimes driven through neighborhoods, where the lawns are so green and well kept, that I experience a tinge of jealousy. My lawn tends to look dry, or patchy with green here and there. When I’ve managed to get it looking green consistently, I have not been able to maintain that look for long. However, I recently learnt of a couple ways to improve this situation, and they seem to be working.
The first way is to aerate the lawn. Due to the fact that the lawn tends to get used often, whether by frequent walks, or children playing on it, or even the regular mowing, the soil tends to get really compacted. This in turn causes water drainage issues, and negatively impacts the absoption of nutrients in the soil. Therefore, the health of the grass which grows, will suffer. This is why aerating the lawn will help. To do this, you can get one of the aerating tools which are made for this. Essentially, you just need something that can make approximately 3 inch deep holes in the lawn soil.
The second way to improve your lawn is to water it smartly. There are more effective ways of watering the lawn than others. For example, watering often is not necessarily a good thing. The recommended way of doing it, is to give about an inch of water maybe once a week. This will result in the roots of the grass growing deeper, which will allow the grass to stay greener for longer dry periods. If your lawn is big, then you will likely want to use a sprinkler to do the job. You can estimate how much water you’re applying by placing some containers around the lawn and measuring the amount in each. When the average is an inch, then you know that your sprinkler has done the job. If your sprinkler is not able to cover the entire area of grass then you might need to utilize a garden hose to complete the job. Also, if you do not have sprinklers, you can use the hose to achieve the same result. If you’re using a hose, you might want to consider investing in a garden hose holder. Garden hose holders are convenient for hose storage, and they come in a variety of forms, shapes, styles, which can really add to the decor of your garden.
